In the medieval Western university, the seven liberal arts were grammar, rhetoric, and logic (the trivium) and geometry, arithmetic, music, and astronomy (the quadrivium). The Trivium: The Liberal Arts of Logic, Grammar, and Rhetorical. Together with the so-called Trivium (grammar, logic, rhetoric), they formed the two parts of the seven liberal arts (septem artes liberales). I've recently shared with a friend of mine, my personal interest in classical liberal arts, specifically a forgotten method known as the trivium, which is comprised of three subjects; grammar, logic, and rhetoric (in that order). The lower division of the seven liberal arts in medieval schools, consisting of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. "Philosophy" was then a composite name for many different disciplines. During medieval times… these subjects (called the Trivium) were extended to include arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy…. Logic: An Aristotelian Approach by Mary Michael Spangler. At the time the seven liberal arts were considered to be branches of philosophy. In her wonderful book, The Trivium: The Liberal Arts of Logic, Grammar, and Rhetoric, Sister Miriam Joseph likens the study of the Liberal Arts to the blooming of a rose. The Trivium: The Liberal Arts of Logic, Grammar, and Rhetoric : Understanding the Nature and Function of Language. The point to be taken here is, as Miriam puts it, “Grammar is the art of inventing symbols and combining them to express thought; logic is the art of thinking; and rhetoric, the art of communicating thought from one mind to another, the adaptation of language to circumstance.” Strike two! The goal of “Reading Like a Historian” is not vocational, but liberal, as in the trivium of the liberal arts: grammar, rhetoric, and logic. The Trivium consisted of: Grammar; Rhetoric; Logic. Grammar, rhetoric, and logic were the core liberal arts. A more advanced, but a thorough and accessible treatment of Aristotle's logical principles. The Liberal Arts were divided into the Trivium (“the three roads”) and the Quadrivium (“the four roads”). Miriam Joseph's book is about the foundation of a classical education, which of course is the Trivium; the three liberal arts of logic, grammar and rhetoric.
